Domestic abuse doesn’t just affect adults. Increasingly, young people are experiencing abuse in their own intimate relationships or are living with it at home. But myths, minimisation, and adult-focused services too often leave their needs unmet.
This CPD-accredited course explores the unique vulnerabilities of adolescents in the context of domestic abuse. Through real-life case examples, group discussion and practical tools, you’ll deepen your understanding of how abuse impacts young people, emotionally, developmentally, and relationally.
You’ll also gain practical knowledge of the Young Person’s DASH risk assessment, how to challenge unhelpful myths, and how to support young people through trauma-aware, age-appropriate responses, including referral through children’s services and wider networks of support.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand how the legal definition of domestic abuse applies to young people
- Recognise the unique risk factors and increased vulnerability of adolescents
- Challenge myths and misconceptions that downplay young people’s experiences
- Assess risk effectively using the Young Person’s DASH tool
- Explore the emotional and behavioural impact of domestic abuse on adolescents
- Identify referral pathways and support networks for young people at risk
- Approach young people with a trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate lens

This half day course is free to all Sheffield workers because we have funding from SCC. If you do not work in Sheffield, please see our national training programme which can be accessed by everybody.
We operate a three strikes policy and non-attenders who miss three sessions will be blocked from registering for future IDAS training.
