Short, live, interactive course
Not all violence in domestic abuse situations is one-sided. Some victims respond to abuse with violent resistance; acts of self-defence or retaliation that are often misunderstood or misinterpreted by professionals and the justice system. Recognising this nuanced dynamic is essential to delivering fair, trauma-informed support and safeguarding.
This interactive course explores the complex reality of violent resistance, helping you distinguish it from coercive control or perpetrator violence. Through case studies, discussion, and legal context, you’ll develop a clear understanding of why some victims may resort to violence and how to respond without victim-blaming.
You’ll leave with practical tools to assess risk, safeguard effectively, and support clients caught in this complicated dynamic.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Define violent resistance and distinguish it from other forms of domestic violence
- Understand the emotional and psychological drivers behind violent resistance
- Recognise the challenges victims face in the justice system and safeguarding processes
- Respond with trauma-informed, non-judgmental approaches
- Support victims effectively while assessing risk and safety needs
Understanding violent resistance ensures no victim is mislabelled or misunderstood.
