Accurately assessing risk is one of the most crucial responsibilities when supporting victim-survivors of domestic abuse. This practical, interactive course equips professionals with a solid understanding of how to risk assess in domestic abuse cases. Using a full risk assessing toolkit which includes professional curiosity, trauma informed enquiry, the DASH risk assessment tool and your professional judgement to identify standard, medium, or high levels of risk.
You’ll also explore the purpose and process of MARACs (Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conferences), learning how cases are referred and what role you and other agencies play in keeping victims and their families safe.
This session builds on your foundational domestic abuse knowledge and gives you the confidence to ask the right questions, record disclosures professionally, and contribute meaningfully to multi-agency safeguarding work.
Prerequisite:
Completion of our Domestic Abuse Essential Training e-learning course (free) or other recognised domestic abuse training.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the purpose and structure of the DASH risk assessment
- Accurately identify standard, medium, or high-risk clients based on victim disclosures and your observations
- Know when and how to refer to MARAC
- Understand your responsibilities before, during, and after a MARAC meeting
- Build confidence in recording risk assessments and safety planning
- Contribute to a coordinated multi-agency response
This half day course is free to all Sheffield workers because we have funding from SCC. If you do not work in Sheffield, please see our national training programme which can be accessed by everybody.

If you are unable to attend your course for any reason, you must unregister so someone else can take your place. IDAS will report repeat incidents of non-attendance to your direct report.
We operate a three strikes policy and non-attenders who miss three sessions will be blocked from registering for future IDAS training.
