‘Honour’-based abuse (HBA) and forced marriage are dangerous, often-hidden forms of domestic abuse that can have devastating consequences for victims and survivors. Often disguised as family or community ‘honour codes’, these forms of abuse can involve coercion, intimidation, emotional abuse, physical violence, restriction of freedom and serious harm or homicide.
IDAS’ half-day training course has been designed to equip professionals with the confidence and expertise needed to recognise warning signs, understand the risks and respond safely to ‘honour’-based abuse. Our session is CPD accredited and will provide you with the practical tools to combat honour-based abuse or forced marriage in your professional role.
Course content
This session will build your understanding of coercive control with a wide range of information, including:
Understanding ‘honour’-based abuse and forced marriage
- What the law says (Domestic Abuse Act 2021)
- The power dynamics of ‘honour’-based abuse and forced marriage
- Examples of abusive and controlling behaviours used by perpetrators
- The impacts of these behaviours on adults and children
Exploring the risks of ‘honour’-based abuse and forced marriage
- Understanding barriers to reporting and accessing support
- Identifying examples of behaviours and activities that may be seen as ‘shameful’
- Real life case studies
Safely supporting survivors
- Understanding cultural contexts and how these may impact survivor experience
- Professional curiosity in challenging abusive practices
- Facilitating disclosure in a trauma-informed way
- Safety planning and signposting for support.
Interactive learning and practical tools
All IDAS training sessions include opportunities for reflective discussion with your fellow learners, collaborative working and putting your learning into practice.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this CPD-accredited course, participants will be able to:
- Understand what honour-based abuse and forced marriage are and signs you might see
- Recognise the warning signs and indicators of risk
- Identify factors that may increase vulnerability and reluctance to report
- Understand the distinction between forced marriage and arranged marriage
- Recognise the impact of honour-based abuse on victims and survivors, including threat to life
- Respond appropriately to concerns and disclosures
- Understand referral pathways and specialist support options.
Certification
This course is CPD accredited, enabling participants to demonstrate ongoing professional development while gaining practical knowledge that can be applied immediately within their role. On completion of the course, you will have the opportunity to receive a CPD certificate of completion for your records.
