Children may not always be the direct target of domestic abuse, but they are always affected by it. The emotional impact of living with fear, unpredictability, and unsafe relationships can be lasting and life-altering.
This interactive, CPD-accredited course places child safeguarding at the heart of domestic abuse practice. Through real-world case examples, group discussion and practical activities, you’ll explore how abuse affects children’s emotional wellbeing, development, behaviour, and safety, and how it impacts a parent’s capacity to protect.
You’ll also gain essential knowledge of risk assessment, safety planning, and referral pathways, empowering you to take informed, trauma-aware action that puts children first.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand how domestic abuse affects children and young people’s emotional and psychological development
- Recognise the impact of abuse on parenting and protective capacity
- Identify the signs and indicators of harm in children affected by domestic abuse
- Apply risk assessment principles and safety planning in a child-centred context
- Take action through appropriate referrals and signposting to specialist services
- Use a trauma-informed approach when working with both children and non-abusive parents
This full day course is free to all Sheffield workers because we have funding from SCC. If you do not work in Sheffield, please see our national training programme which can be accessed by everybody.

If you are unable to attend your course for any reason, you must unregister so someone else can take your place. IDAS will report repeat incidents of non-attendance to your direct report.
We operate a three strikes policy and non-attenders who miss three sessions will be blocked from registering for future IDAS training.
