Professionals working with children, young people, and adults may encounter harmful practices disguised as tradition. This CPD-accredited course provides essential, trauma-informed guidance to help you understand and respond to honour-based abuse (HBA), forced marriage, and female genital mutilation (FGM) with clarity, confidence, and cultural sensitivity.
Through real-life case studies, facilitated discussion, and interactive activities, you’ll gain insight into the complex motivations and dynamics behind these abuses, including family complicity, community pressure, and control disguised as care.
This training equips you to recognise the signs, ask the right questions, and take effective safeguarding action, without stereotyping, colluding, or missing crucial red flags.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the definitions, patterns, and motivations behind honour-based abuse, forced marriage, and FGM
- Recognise the warning signs and hidden indicators that someone may be at risk
- Explore how these practices intersect with domestic abuse, coercive control, and cultural norms
- Navigate your safeguarding duties and legal responsibilities, including the FGM mandatory reporting duty and Forced Marriage Protection Orders
- Gain confidence in having safe, sensitive conversations and making referrals to the appropriate services
- Respond using a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive approach that protects the individual while respecting cultural context
- Understand the importance of early intervention and multi-agency working to keep victims and those at risk safe

We operate a three strikes policy and non-attenders who miss three sessions will be blocked from registering for future IDAS training.
